The winery was born with A16, a place also called «La Perla» because it did not fall hail, its inclination helped to not suffer the frosts and its vines were majestic. We started from scratch with an abandoned farm and decided to do something different that motivated us day by day, so we changed the inclination to the plants by technical suggestion, because in this way we could lower a degree of alcoholic level, in order to achieve more harmony in the wine structure and optimum maturation.

At Illahe, our goal is to make wine as naturally as possible from soil to bottle. We work by hand on small lots with age-old techniques and materials. Our focus is to grow and make quality Pinot Noir and white wines that express the vintage and their varietal characteristics. We don’t use enzymes or additives. Some of our wines are made entirely by hand, with no electricity or modern mechanization. We use a gentle wooden basket press and age our Pinot Noir in French and Oregon oak.

Mary and I created a bridge between the Old World and the New by bringing our Burgundian experiences home to California. By living in Burgundy, attending school, and studying with the Masters, we learned those principles that define great Burgundy: low yields, French clones, distinct terroirs, and slow èlevage.
