The winery was born with A16, a place also called «La Perla» because it did not fall hail, its inclination helped to not suffer the frosts and its vines were majestic. We started from scratch with an abandoned farm and decided to do something different that motivated us day by day, so we changed the inclination to the plants by technical suggestion, because in this way we could lower a degree of alcoholic level, in order to achieve more harmony in the wine structure and optimum maturation.

ILLAHE, pronounced Ill-Uh-Hee, is a local Chinook word meaning “earth” or “place” or “soil”
At Illahe, our goal is to make wine as naturally as possible from soil to bottle. We work by hand on small lots with age-old techniques and materials. Our focus is to grow and make quality Pinot Noir and white wines that express the vintage and their varietal characteristics. We don’t use enzymes or additives. Some of our wines are made entirely by hand, with no electricity or modern mechanization. We use a gentle wooden basket press and age our Pinot Noir in French and Oregon oak.

These were made in the Cueva de los Curas (Priests’ Cavern), an ancient cellar carved out of the ground and which still today forms part of the landscape of the area.

Mary and I created a bridge between the Old World and the New by bringing our Burgundian experiences home to California. By living in Burgundy, attending school, and studying with the Masters, we learned those principles that define great Burgundy: low yields, French clones, distinct terroirs, and slow èlevage. The life of the «Vigneron» also captured our admiration. In France, the Vigneron is the center of the complete cycle of winemaking, tending the vines, harvesting, and raising the wines, and greeting his customers at the cellar door, Viticulturist, Enologist, and Marketing Department all in one.

His position was oenologist although in these times they were called chemists, there were no winemakers in Spain at that time. He left Protos in 1988 to start Pago de Carraovejas. He stayed there till 2008, in total 20 years.

The aim is to make an outstanding wine reflecting distinct locations, blending them at the end of the aging process to obtain balance and complexity. Since Tarapaca was founded at the foothills of the Andes mountain range in 1874, we have crafted elegant, quality wines, becoming one of the most traditional and historical Chilean wineries, as well as a benchmark for viticulture in Chile and over 50 countries.
Our winery is located in Isla de Maipo, which is considered as the finest and most traditional area for the production of fine wines in Chile. The Estate is comprised of 2,600 hectares, of which 611 are planted with vineyards. It is a unique place surrounded by mountains and the river Maipo. For this reason, the El Rosario Estate is known as “Maipo Valley’s Natural Clos”.
